There is nothing more powerful than gratitude.

Try it! RIGHT NOW, what are 3 things you’re grateful for?

⚕️HEALTH
Multiple studies have explored the link between gratitude, mental health, and the reduction of stress, inflammation, and pain perception, as well as improvement in sleep, immunity, and cardiovascular health.

✅ IT’S A TO-DO
Gratitude is healing and happiness … and it doesn’t just happen. It is a skill. Like any skill, it can be learned, it must be practiced, and you get better at it the more you do it. As a recent @harvard_health article put it: “Gratitude is a way for people to appreciate what they have instead of always reaching for something new in the hopes it will make them happier or thinking they can’t feel satisfied until every physical and material need is met. Gratitude helps people refocus on what they have instead of what they lack. And, although it may feel contrived at first, this mental state grows stronger with use and practice.”

💌 WRITE A THANK-YOU NOTE
About once a month (and certainly whenever you feel like it!) thank someone for their impact on you or how they inspired you or just for who they are. Write yourself one ever so often, too!

🧘 MEDITATE
Being fully present is an effective way to help you appreciate what you have right this moment. And there is always something to be grateful for.

📝 MAKE A LIST
The simple act of writing down three or more things that you’re grateful for has been shown to increase positivity, life satisfaction, and happiness, and to lessen depressive symptoms.

Printed books have multiple benefits! #MultitaskingMonday #skinstrumental

👁 LESS EYE STRAIN
In a much, much more virtual world, our eyes are glued to screens for most of the day for work and entertainment. Printed books give your eyes a break and won’t add to screen fatigue.

😴 BETTER SLEEP
Multiple studies show that looking at a gadget before sleep is not a good thing. Not only do you tend to sleep later but the blue light can affect your circadian rhythm and melatonin levels. Printed books don’t do this and can even help you fall asleep.

🧘🏽‍♀️ DIGITAL DETOX
Reading on the phone means constant distractions. Ebooks might not interrupt you with social media alerts or messages but digital readers tend to click on keywords or look up new words (which can lead to a longer distraction as you get sucked into related topics).

🧠 BRAIN FUNCTION & MENTAL HEALTH
Regular reading makes you smarter and more empathic. New studies show that the feel of paper at your fingertips and flipping pages can improve understanding and absorption. A 2009 study suggests that reading a physical book can help reduce stress by as much as 68% (while multiple studies show that time on gadgets increases stress).

✨ BETTER FOR YOUR SKIN!
Bet you didn’t see this one coming! While books can have allergens — glue, inks, dyes, formaldehyde-type preservatives, resins and acrylates (in laminations), and leather — digital reading gadgets and covers have plastics, preservatives, dyes, rubbers, and metals. The risk of reactions is higher, too, because you hold your gadgets much more all day. Don’t forget cumulative blue light exposure: it causes hyperpigmentations!

Skin darkening on your private parts? #SkintelSunday

🍿 Watch the video: s.myvmv.com/SkinDarkeningPrivateParts

🤔 WHAT
Darkening under breasts, on the groin, under the buttocks, etc. tends to be either post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) or pigmented contact dermatitis (PCD).

💥 PIH
… is more easily diagnosed because the darkening is preceded by itching, redness, a rash or other signs of inflammation.

⏳ PCD
… is less known. Like PIH, it is darkening due to a contact dermatitis (a reaction to something the skin comes into contact with). Unlike PIH, it is a gradual darkening of the skin without obvious signs of inflammation preceding it. Because of this, PCD is frequently dismissed as “just aging.”

👙 WHAT TO AVOID IN CLOTHING?
Bright or dark colors, elastics, foams, metals, rough fabrics. Choose breathable, soft, natural materials that are looser in fit.

🧼 WHAT TO AVOID IN OTHER THINGS?
Fragrances, dyes, and preservatives in body soaps, washes, and lotions, and in laundry products.

🕵️ GET A PATCH TEST
You might be avoiding black underwear needlessly if you’re actually sensitive to red dye! A patch test takes the guess work out of prevention.

⚪️ HOW TO LIGHTEN?
Prevention alone can be dramatic — and you it even with active treatments to prevent recurrence. Illuminants can be effective but with your doctor’s ok and being extra careful about application (go slow and avoid mucosal areas).

🔬⚗️ SHOP our non-comedogenic, non-acnegenic, validated hypoallergenic products — the majority with our clinically-published VCO plus monolaurin — at vmvhypoallergenics.com!

One miracle is waking today. Another is the staggering complexity of each of your cell’s functions. A big miracle is your skin: how it protects you, how it grows with you, how it communicates health, anger, breathlessness, love! Science is a miracle. Coconut oil is a miracle. That cupcake was a miracle. The sky’s blue is a miracle. Coffee is a miracle. Friendship is a miracle.

What else is a miracle?

1. Skin darkening on private parts — groin, breasts, buttocks, etc. — is often:
{A} Pigmented contact dermatitis (PCD)
{B} Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH)
{C} All of the above

2. PIH is relatively easy to identify because it is preceded by redness, itching, a rash, etc.

3. PCD is often misdiagnosed as “just skin aging” because it is a gradual darkening not preceded by typical signs of inflammation.
{A} True
{B} False

4. Your underwear could be a cause:
{A} True! Dyes (bright or dark colors), elastics, foams, rubbers, metal fasteners, and tight materials (especially in these areas which are often covered and get sweaty and humid) can cause darkening.
{B} False.

5. Fragrances, dyes, preservatives, and other top allergens in which other things can also cause darkening?
{A} Soap
{B} Body wash
{C} Genital washes, lubes, etc.

Is moisturizer necessary? What to look for? #SkintelSunday #skintelligence

💧 NECESSARY
The skin’s barrier is responsible for its elasticity, glow, and clarity. We’re exposed to more chemicals, radiation (including blue light), irritants such as disinfectants, and a generally poorer diet than our grandparents. All these things harm our barrier layer and moisturizers keep it healthy.

🔴 EVEN OILY SKIN?
Yup. Dry skin can get acne and oily skin can have barrier defect. A defective barrier is welcoming to microbes that can cause more infections and make clearing acne difficult.

Look for…

🛡 OCCLUSIVES …
… like petrolatum, mineral oil, or virgin coconut oil to help the skin retain water so that it can repair itself.

🥥 HUMECTANTS
Vegetable oils such as coconut oil are made up of triglycerides (3 fatty acids + glycerin). Glycerin helps skin retain moisture and fatty acids replace those that we lose from age or damage.

🌱 GOOD LIPIDS
All our body’s cell walls are made up of lipids. Applying (and ingesting) healthy fats is good for our cells’ walls.

🥥 VCO …
… is occlusive but, unlike petrolatum or mineral oil, is non-greasy and has fatty acids. It’s also a humectant. And it helps balance the skin’s microbiota.

😇 NO ALLERGENS OR COMEDOGENS
Comedogens clog pores. Allergens can cause further barrier defect or irritate the pore, causing inflammation and acne.

🔬⚗️ SHOP our non-comedogenic, non-acnegenic, validated hypoallergenic products — the majority with our clinically-published VCO plus monolaurin — at vmvhypoallergenics.com!

••• YOU COULD WIN A $10 ONLINE GIFT CARD:
Choose the CORRECT statement for each question! •••

Hint: find the answers in our video “Is Virgin Coconut Oil Comedogenic Or Not?” on YouTube! s.myvmv.com/NonComedogenicCoconutOilVideo

1. Pure, organic, first-cold-pressed virgin coconut oil is…
{A} Non-comedogenic
{B} Comedogenic

2. Claims that VCO is comedogenic are based on old, inconsistent Rabbit Ear Assays studies from the 1970s that have since been superseded by newer, more accurate, more consistent studies on comedogenicity and acnegenicity.
{A} True
{B} False

3. If you do experience acne from a coconut oil …
{A} Make sure that it is pure and unadulterated (some “VCOs” are mixed with other oils to try to mimic the almost-non-smell of premium VCO).
{B} Check if it is RBD (refined, bleached, deodorized) oil which can irritate the pore, causing inflammation and acne.
{C} Check what other substances you’re exposed that might be contributing to the acne.
{D} All of the above

4. Newer methodologies for testing a product’s tendency to cause acne are done on human skin and are more specific, measuring oil production and tackling inflammatory follicular targets.
{A} True
{B} False

5. “Non-comedogenic” is all you need to prevent acne.
{A} True
{B} False — you need non-acnegenic and non-allergenic as well to prevent not just clogging but also inflammation of the pore

6. Pure, organic, cold-first-pressed VCO isn’t just non-comedogenic. It’s also hypoallergenic, anti-inflammatory, and broad-spectrum antimicrobial so that it can help treat acne in addition to preventing it.
{A} True
{B} False

Digital detox for your brain … and your skin? 😲 #TopTipTuesday #skingenious

Research is consistent in linking heavy technology use with stress, poor sleep, reduced focus, loneliness, and depression. In adolescents, new studies show a link with increased symptoms of ADHD, poor self-regulation, and conduct disorder.

But here’s what no one talks about: a digital detox is also great for your skin!

🔴 ALLERGENS ABOUND IN DIGITAL THINGS
Your phone case, phone, laptop, remote control, and other accessories have more top contact allergens that you realize such as dyes and black coloring, nickel, and rubber. Benzophenones (2014 Allergen of the Year) are UV absorbers found in some plastics and even circuit boards. Cleaning wipes can have fragrances and preservatives. All can cause reactions in your hands, fingers, and face (such as your ear or cheek near where you hold your phone).

💡 VISIBLE (BLUE) LIGHT
Hyperpigmentations are the first to appear but other signs of photo-aging can follow. Armada Sun + Light Screens are tested specifically for Visible Light, as well as Infrared, UVA, and UVB: apply it daily, indoors and out!

⏸ DIGITAL DETOX IDEAS
Turn off notifications over lunch or when working out. Make a no-phones-at-mealtimes rule with fam and friends. Put down the phone and pick up a book about an hour before bedtime. Keep your phone in the bathroom or far away from you when you go to bed. Go device-free one day a weekend: hike, cook, bake, dive into books or painting … anything to give your mind and skin a healthy break from tech.

If a detox isn’t enough to save your skin, choose digital accessories without your allergens (get a patch test to be sure). A white, pale, or uncolored pure cotton cloth can also be a great barrier when touching your devices.

You already know how great Boo-Boo Balm is for cuts and scrapes and burns and eczema flares and more … but did you know how healing it is on hands? #MultitaskingMonday #skinstrumental

👋 DISINFECTION DILEMMAS
The constant hand washing and sanitizing is NECESSARY … but has taken its toll on hands worldwide, with redness, sensitivity, dryness, and other irritations on the rise. Switching to unscented, allergen-free, non-irritating options like Essence soaps and washes or Coo & Clean (even VMV facial cleansers!) and Kid Gloves or Id Monolaurin Gel is important to prevent problems. Follow with Boo-Boo Balm to heal. Its barrier-repairing virgin coconut oil, anti-inflammatory monolaurin, and occlusive petrolatum are godsends for haggard hands. Spread it all over mangled mitts after each hand washing, before bed, and throughout the day as needed.

💅🏽 CUTICLE CALAMITIES
Use Boo-Boo Balm to soften dried cuticles and deal with minor infections from cuts and filing and picking at nails and nail beds.

Happy hands with Boo-Boo Balm!

What causes underarm darkening, itching, and bumps and how to fix them? Watch the video at s.myvmv.com/FixUnderarmSkinProblems #SkintelSunday

🔴 REACTION TO STUFF YOU’RE USING
More often than not, axillary (underarm) skin problems are a reaction to your deodorant, antiperspirant, body soap, laundry soap, and/or clothing. Allergens in these products can cause itching and reddening — darkening can follow as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH).

💐 DEODORANT, ANTIPERSPIRANT & SOAP
A very common culprit is perfume, a top contact allergen. Other problematic ingredients in products used on the underarms include preservatives and dyes.

👚 CLOTHING & LAUNDRY DETERGENT
Particularly for your bras and tops, opt for pure cotton or other natural fabrics that are pale in color or un-colored and un-bleached. Avoid stretchy materials and metal accessories.

⚫️ ALUMINUM ZIRCONIUM …
… causes granulomas or bumps (which can also result in PIH).

😇 THE FIX: AVOID THE CAUSES!
Switch to any of our body washes to cleanse the underarms — which you can also use to launder your bras and tops! Use Essence Skin-Saving Antiperspirant (or Stay Fresh-ener in the US) for dryness and odor control. If you need more active lightening, check out Illuminants Axillight.

🔬⚗️ SHOP our non-comedogenic, non-acnegenic, validated hypoallergenic products — the majority with our clinically-published VCO plus #monolaurin — at vmvhypoallergenics.com!

🔴 HAD A PATCH TEST? ASK US TO CUSTOMIZE RECOMMENDATIONS BASED ON YOUR ALLERGENS!
