Cleansers Versus Soaps

What’s the Big Difference? Because of the way soaps are made, they inherently tend to have higher pH levels than cream cleansers.

Why are pH-Levels Important? Your skin’s natural pH is neutral, at about 5.5 to 6.5. Ideally, anything you use on your skin should be close to that range to keep your skin comfortable.

Because of the ways soaps are made, they inherently have high pH-levels. This can be irritating and denaturing to skin and cause redness, itching and excessive dryness. This is especially true the harder the soap (as a general rule, the harder the soap, the higher the pH). This concern is heightened if you are using active treatment products on your skin (see below).

This is why VMV HYPOALLERGENICS® only makes cream or liquid cleansers for facial cleansing, which can be made to have more neutral pH levels. For body cleansing, VMV makes both cream cleansers and soft soaps, with pH-levels kept as neutral as possible:

When Using an Advanced Treatment Product, do I Need a Special Cleanser?

Almost all active ingredients with clinically-proven efficacy have low-pH ranges. When you use advanced treatment products with active ingredients such as Re-Everything, Illuminants+, or Id, your skin adjusts to the lower pH-range with proper use over time. However, if you use a cleanser (especially a hard soap) with a very high pH, your skin is stressed by having to adjust between the two extremes. Irritations such as redness, stinging, or itching can occur. This is why all VMV HYPOALLERGENICS® active treatment therapies come in complete systems with pH-adjusted cleansers and other support products to keep skin comfortable throughout therapy.

Add regular (bi-weekly, monthly, or other) clinically-sound Vx Facials and Skin Services, each specifically designed to bring out the most of your at-home VMV regimen, and you create a skinsational cycle of healthier skin > regular glow-boosters and deep-cleanings that can help you achieve your skin goals as quickly and effectively as possible.
